The short answer
If beehiiv's price is the reason you are looking, Kit's Free plan holds 10,000 subscribers and FlockStack prices by the emails you send instead of by list size. If you want a website-first publication you own, Ghost is open source. If you want a small tool with add-ons priced apart, Buttondown. If you want an ad network inside the platform, none of the five replaces beehiiv's. Each fact here was read from the provider's own pages on October 20, 2026. The platforms are listed alphabetically after beehiiv, not ranked, and none was tested hands-on for this page.
How the alternatives were chosen and compared
These five were chosen because each is a platform for newsletters and publishes its prices. The criteria are the ones that tend to decide a move from beehiiv:
- Price at your list size, and what the price follows.
- Sending volume: whether the plan limits how often you can email.
- Growth tools: recommendations, referrals and ads.
- Automation.
- API and MCP access, for connecting the newsletter to other tools and AI assistants.
- Ownership: the code, your list, and where it runs.
FlockStack is one of the five, and where a competitor is the better choice, the section says so. Where a provider's page doesn't list a fact, this page says "not listed".
What a newsletter costs on each
A weekly issue to every subscriber, billed monthly, at three list sizes, with no paying readers. beehiiv is the first row, for reference. Prices were read from each provider's own pricing page.
| Platform | The price follows | 1,000 subscribers | 10,000 subscribers | 25,000 subscribers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| beehiiv (the one being replaced) | The size of the list; sends are not limited | $0 (Free) | $139 (Lite) | $199 (Lite) |
| Buttondown | Active subscribers, with add-ons priced apart | $9 (base) | $79 (base) | $239 (base) |
| FlockStack | The emails you send in a month, with a cap on active subscribers | $0 (Free) | $29 (Growth) | $29 (Growth) |
| Ghost | Members | $29 (Publisher, billed yearly) | $88 (Publisher, billed yearly) | $102 (Publisher, billed yearly) |
| Kit | The size of the list; sends are not limited | $0 (Free) | $0 (Free) | $199 (Creator) |
| MailerLite | The size of the list | $19 Comfort, $39 Power | $89 Comfort, $129 Power | $179 Comfort, $239 Power |
The plans don't include the same things, so read the table with care. beehiiv's and Kit's Free plans have no automations. MailerLite's two prices are its Comfort plan, which limits monthly emails, and its Power plan, which doesn't. Buttondown's figure is its base price; automations add $29 a month and paid subscriptions $9. Ghost's figure is its Publisher plan, billed yearly, which is the first to sell paid subscriptions. FlockStack's follows the emails you send, so a daily send to a large list costs more than this weekly case. Enter your own sends in the newsletter cost calculator. What you may be leaving, and what you may miss
beehiiv prices by list size and puts no limit on sends, and its pricing page lists an ad network from Lite, a recommendation network, a referral program, automations from Lite and web hosting on every plan. On beehiiv, paid subscriptions carry a 0% take rate on Lite and Pro. The reasons people leave are usually the price steps as a list grows, a Free plan with no automations or paid subscriptions, or wanting to own more of the stack. beehiiv changed its plans and prices in October 2026, and PPC Land reported creators' reactions on October 8, 2026; FlockStack vs beehiiv sets that report beside the facts. If you earn from beehiiv's ad network or sponsorship tools, moving means finding sponsors some other way.
Sending volume
beehiiv and Ghost list no limit on sends, and Kit lists no limit on broadcasts. MailerLite's Comfort plan limits monthly emails and Power does not. Buttondown's prices assume at most one email a day to your whole list. FlockStack gives each plan a monthly allowance and charges per 1,000 emails past it, up to a monthly cap you set, which suits a steady schedule more than a daily send to a large list.
The alternatives, one by one
Buttondown
Best for: writers who want a small, focused tool with an API and prefer to pay only for the features they use. What it offers: a base price by active subscribers, a Free plan for the first 100, add-ons for paid subscriptions, automations, tagging and more, and a documented API. The trade-off: the add-ons add up, and its pricing page doesn't describe recommendation or referral tools. Choose it over FlockStack if you want a minimal product and a simple monthly price.
FlockStack
Best for: publishers who send on a schedule and want to pay for the emails they send, with a REST API and an MCP server on every plan and open-source code (AGPL-3.0). What it offers: a Free plan with 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails a month, paid plans priced by the emails you send with a cap on active subscribers, 0% of paid subscriptions, automations with 15 triggers, a referral program and an opt-in recommendations directory. The trade-off: no ad network, no mobile app, and a Free plan with 1 newsletter and 2 automations. Choose it if the price per email, API-first work with AI assistants or the source code matter more than built-in monetization tools. See the pricing page, the newsletter API and the MCP server.
Ghost
Best for: publications that want a full website and publishing system. What it offers: open-source software with managed hosting, no limit on sends, recommendations, the Ghost Explore network and a referral program on every plan, paid subscriptions with 0% transaction fees from Publisher, and member import and export. The trade-off: its price follows members, its Starter plan has no paid subscriptions, and automation runs through Zapier or n8n from Publisher rather than inside the product. Choose it over FlockStack if you want a website-first publication with a theme marketplace and the 8,000+ integrations its pricing page lists from Publisher.
Kit
Best for: creators who sell products and want automations and sequences. What it offers: a Free plan to 10,000 subscribers with no limit on broadcasts, visual automations and sequences from Creator, an MCP server from Creator, a referral system on Pro, and a fee of 3.5% + $0.30 a transaction on sales, with card processing included. The trade-off: the Free plan has no automations, and Creator's price steps up with your list. Choose it over FlockStack if you want a creator toolkit with its own selling features.
MailerLite
Best for: small teams that want a general email tool with automations on a free plan. What it offers: a Free plan with 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month that includes automations, full MCP and API access on paid plans, and a pricing page that says every paid plan gets its full feature set. The trade-off: the Free plan is small, and its Comfort plan has lower limits than Power. Choose it over FlockStack if you want a general-purpose tool and don't need open-source code.
Moving from beehiiv
Export your subscribers from beehiiv as a CSV, and your posts if you want them. FlockStack reads a beehiiv subscriber export, and imports your posts as sent issues dated as before, with no email going out. Your old links keep working only if your newsletter was on a domain of your own, and paying readers don't move across as paying subscribers: they subscribe again through your new subscribe page. The beehiiv switch guide has the steps in order. For the other platforms, read their import guides before you cancel anything.

Questions
- What is the best alternative to beehiiv?
- It depends on why you are leaving. If the price of a larger list is the reason, Kit's Free plan holds 10,000 subscribers and FlockStack prices by the emails you send. If you want a website-first publication, Ghost. If you want a small tool with add-ons priced apart, Buttondown. beehiiv's ad network has no equivalent among the five.
- Is there a free alternative to beehiiv?
- Several platforms have free plans. Kit's holds 10,000 subscribers, FlockStack's holds 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails a month with 2 automations, MailerLite's holds 250 subscribers, and Buttondown is free for the first 100. beehiiv's own Free plan holds 2,500 subscribers without automations or paid subscriptions.
- Which beehiiv alternative doesn't price by list size?
- FlockStack prices by the emails you send in a month, with a cap on active subscribers, and Brevo, which this page doesn't compare, prices by emails sent too. beehiiv, Kit, MailerLite, Ghost and Buttondown price by subscribers, members or contacts.
- Which beehiiv alternatives have an API or MCP server?
- Per their pricing pages read on October 20, 2026, beehiiv lists API access on every plan, Kit lists an MCP server from Creator, MailerLite lists full MCP and API access on paid plans, Ghost lists a Content API on every plan and an Admin API from Publisher, and Buttondown documents an API. FlockStack has a REST API and an MCP server with write access on every plan.
- Can I move from beehiiv to FlockStack?
- Yes. FlockStack reads a beehiiv subscriber export and imports your published posts as sent issues dated as before, with no email going out. Paying subscribers don't move over as paying readers: they subscribe again through your new subscribe page.
- Are these alternatives independently tested?
- No. The facts come from each provider's own pricing and documentation pages, read on October 20, 2026, and none of the platforms was tested hands-on for this page. FlockStack is one of the options, so read it as a vendor's page.
